OK. I have to say that the weather this year has been absolusly screwy this year.

Yesterday I was wearing a long sleeved shirt... In August! Today woke up to lower sixties and clouds, so it really feels like sixty, which is really nice if you ask me.

Since the weather was so nice last night, we had a change of plans for dinner and ended up at Five Guys for a burger and fries, which was the best burger I've had. At least best that didn't come off my grill :)

Boeuf Bourguignon

Was feeling slightly off my game this morning, so I called off work and relaxed at home. This afternoon I was feeling better so I felt like cooking and invited our friend Eric over for a true French dinner. We saw the movie "Julie and Julia" together and promised if I cooked this dish I'd have him over.

Again I channeled my inner Julia Child and made Boeuf Bourguignon, which turned out really fabulous!!

It's not your every day meal, but glad I went the extra mile.

Reine de Saba avec Glaçage au Chocolat

OK. I've gone and done it (well... almost.. more the almost later) and made my first recipe from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It's a Chocolate and Almond Cake with Chocolate Butter Creme Icing. Yum!

I got a late start (nothing on TV and was somewhat restless... what will I ever do when fall TV kicks back up?!?) and got the cake baked and cooled, butter creme icing made and started to ice the cake and the warm kitchen finally started to have it's way and my icing. I put on the scratch coat of icing and put the cake in the fridge overnight, which means I have a lovely chocolate cake waiting for me when I get home. Yea!!

For anyone out there interested:

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

4 ounces or squares semisweet chocolate melted with 2 Tb rum or coffee
1/4 lb. or 1 stick softened butter
2/3 cup granulated sugar
3 egg yolks
3 egg whites
Pinch of salt
1 Tb granulated sugar
2/3 cup pulverized almonds
1/4 tsp almond extract
1/2 cup cake flour (scooped and leveled) turned into a sifter

For the Icing:

2 ounces (2 squares) semisweet baking chocolate
2 Tb rum or coffee
5 to 6 Tb unsalted butter

Equipment:

A round cake pan 8 inches in diameter and 1-1/2 inches deep
A 3-quart mixing bowl
A wooden spoon or an electric beater
A rubber spatula
A cake rack
A small covered pan
A larger pan of almost simmering water
A wooden spoon
A bowl with a tray of ice cubes and water to cover them
A small flexible-blade metal spatula or a table knife

Instructions:

For the Cake:

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Butter and flour the cake pan. Set the chocolate and rum or coffee in a small pan, cover, and place (off heat) in a larger pan of almost simmering water; let melt while you proceed with the recipe. Measure out the rest of the ingredients. Cream the butter and sugar together for several minutes until they form a pale yellow, fluffy mixture.

Beat in the egg yolks until well blended.

Beat the egg whites and salt in a separate bowl until soft peaks are formed; sprinkle on the sugar and beat until stiff peaks are formed.

With a rubber spatula, blend the melted chocolate into the butter and sugar mixture, then stir in almonds, and almond extract. Immediately stir one fourth of the beaten egg whites to lighten the batter. Delicately fold in a third of the remaining whites and when partially blended, sift on one third of the flour and continue folding. Alternate rapidly with more egg whites and more flour until all egg whites and flour are incorporated.

Turn the batter into the cake pan, pushing the batter up to its rim with a rubber spatula. Bake in middle level of preheated oven for about 25 minutes. Cake is done when it has puffed, and 2-1/2 to 3 inches around the circumference are set so that a needle plunged into that area comes out clean; the center should move slightly if the pan is shaken, and a needle comes out oily.

Allow cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Run knife around the edge of the pan, and reverse cake on the rack. Allow it to cool for an hour or two; it must be thoroughly cold if it is to be iced.

For the Icing:

Place the chocolate and rum or coffee in the small pan, cover, and set in the larger pan of almost simmering water. Remove pans from heat and let chocolate melt for 5 minutes or so, until perfectly smooth. Lift chocolate pan out of the hot water, and beat in the butter a tablespoon at a time. Then beat over the ice and water until chocolate mixture has cooled to spreading consistency. At once spread it over your cake with spatula or knife, and press a design of almonds over the icing.

Yield: For an 8-inch cake serving 6 to 8 people

Summer finally shows up!!

OK. Someone finally told Summer that she was missing all of the fun. These past few days we have received a refresher course of summertime, thanks to ninety degrees and enough humidity to kill a snowman in under thirty seconds, but I knew the cool summer wouldn't last.

Trying to keep it all in perspective... a healthy dose of air conditioning surely helps with that!

Saw my first Christmas items at Micheals this past weekend, which in itself is just a tad scary!

Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia... who would have thought that a movie based (at least partially) on a blog, but you know what, it was really entertaining and I enjoyed it very much!

I adore Meryl Streep and when I first saw the trailer, it was Meryl as Julia Child that instantly made me want to see this movie. I went into the movie fully expecting to enjoy the Julia, but endouring the Julie portion of the movie, but I was wrong. Both of the stories were a pleasure to watch and carried the full distance of the movie.

If you get the chance, go... you won't be disapointed.

More... is... more!

One quick update today. We're adding an additional 16 channels for this years show, bringing us to a total of 48 channels.

We're also looking at more LED's for the display and still in need of a good electrician that can do quality work on a limited budget. If you know anyone that can do a small amount of work for us before the end of October, please drop a line, I'd really appreciate it.

Last year we had to use extra channels just to break some of the elements apart to to electrical draw on the controllers, so replacing the C7's in the display with LED, it will allow us to reclaim a few channels that were otherwise "lost" last year.

Happy Thursday... the weekend's almost here!!
